This announcement of Carl's passing has been a bit of a shock... to say the
least. To continue this online commerative ....
I knew him as well - from San Francisco - the 1980s' - Art Com - co-founded
with Nancy Frank and embarked upon an early involvement with screening
distrubuting " video art " as well as performance and books ... from
their original loft space on South Van Ness ( next to SF Camerawork ). I
believe that they also published their own book on performance - the title
of which escapes me at the moment.
He was very much a part of the rather fractious SF scene. From video he
soon migrated into computers and technology ( familar scenario ) and was
one of the earliest to support and advance the port-a-pak / reel-to reel
"purist " sensibility of the '70's. For the most part, the artists that
ArtCom distrubuted exemplified that approach to time-based practice, and
included Ant Farm, Dara Birnbaum, Jeanne Finley, Doug Hall, Gary Hill,
Lynnn Hirshman, Chip Lord, John Sanborn / Kit Fitzgerald, Bill Viola,
myself etc.
Again, he was one of the earliest proponents to recogonize the potentials
of on-line with his association with the WELL. He and Anna Couey, the
WELL, et all were also supportive of one of the first online cultural /
activist global projects " 69 hours / On-line against AIDS " which took
place in 1990 and involved a singularly impressive collective of
alternative art spaces, community participants and health care services.
As with many non-profits in the US during the early to mid 90's, Art Com
was suffering from severe financial problems due to ( among other things)
the shrinkage of funding opportunities which engendered the expected
results - loss of staff, loss of space+++++. I think that it all proved to
be a bit too much at that point . My understanding is that Carl was
offered either a research or teaching position at Carnegie Mellon and left
SF. I had hear little about him since 1995 /96 execpt that he was doing
well at CM.... what he was doing - I'm not at all sure.
